Shelf Candy Saturday!!! (6)

Thanks to Five Alarm Book Reviews for hosting Shelf Candy every Saturday!

My Shelf Candy for this Saturday is:

"Fox & Phoenix" by Beth Bernobich
Synopsis can be found here.

You know there's magic in this book just by looking at the cover!

The lovely green hue of the tinted city and the rainbow of color from the neon lights set the tone of mystery in the big city. But it's the wispy magical animals, one at each characters' side that pulled me in wanting more. What are they animals? Can people see them and how are they tied to each character?

I feel the cover shows a real feeling of the city. Dark shadows and black storefronts contrasting with the hot pink and yellow lights. I love the silhouettes in the background, their shadows misty in the background and the yellowish green tone of the world. It seems like it's rooted in reality, but not this reality.

I love reading graphic novels and this cover reminds me of some of the artwork I see from that world. It's intriguing, creative and shows a real sense of the world that's contained in the book.

After writing this shelf candy, I found the book at my local bookshop! I figured it was a sign and snatched it up!

  1. I saw this book on goodreads a while back. Great pick. It has this middle-grade feel I find is really artsy and bright.

  2. I have not seen this book until now. It has a terrific cover. It looks like actual illustration, which in this case is quite a display of talent. It really does translate a lot of ideas. Thanks for sharing it.
