TGIF at G Reads! (6)

Thanks to G Reads! for hosting! And TGIF!
This week's question is: Book to Movie: Which book turn movie do you feel did the best adaptation? What about the worst?

There are so many wonderful and awful adaptations of books to film. How to choose?!

My favorites include:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

Let's face it. All the Harry Potter films are amazing adaptations of the books. But I think my favorite might be tied between the two films based on the seventh book, or Prizoner of Azkaban.

The third film does a beautiful job of capturing the darker, more sinister tone of the book. The previous two films/books were geared more towards kids. This was the first film I thought- oh, this is for adults. And it's my favorite book. And let's not get me started about Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. Ah. Maze. Ing.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

Perfect book and beautifully cast. I cannot imagine anyone else as the beautiful Buttercup or the dashing stable boy Wesley. I've re-read the book and watched the film again and again and it still holds up today.
"Hello. My name is Indigo Montoya. You killed my father...."

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Gorgeous. Emma Thompson. Kate Winslet. Alan Rickman. Need I say more? Didn't think so.

Stardust by Neil Gaiman

and I love Stardust. I even like the film more than the book. (Stop throwing things at me!) I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman and that film is simply magical. Even the soundtrack is breathtaking.

Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

Both the film and book are heart-wrenchingly real, disgustingly true ways we hurt and keep the ones we love. The story may take place decades ago, but the themes are all there today. I cried reading the book and even though I knew what was coming, I balled while watching the film. Kudos to Winslet and DiCaprio who broke my heart all over again.

Bad adaptations-
oh where to begin. Let's start with:

Breaking Dawn Part I, by Stephanie Meyer

Oh. Dear.
I'm going on the record to say that I like Twilight. There. I said it.
I know, I know. I'm not saying it's Shakespeare, but the first few books were lots of fun. Granted, the fourth and final book of the series I found to be a big disappointment, but Breaking Dawn part I the film was so bad...
I think I'll just stick to watching the first one and pretending it ended there.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Brilliant book, less than brillant adaptation. Even my boyfriends Alan Rickman and Martin Freeman couldn't save it.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I love Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I especially love the mini series with Mr. Darcy as Colin Firth. I mean, uh, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Yes, that's it. And Jennifer Ehle is gorgeous.
So it was such a disappointment to watch this film adaptation. The music is beautiful (I did buy the soundtrack) and all the major plot points are there, but it lacks the fun, romance and depth that the book had. And I am NOT a fan of Keira Knightly, so that might also have done it in for me.

Thanks for reading and until next time!!
