Winter Wishlist- Week Three!

Thanks to Read Now Sleep Later for hosting!

Week Three:
Write about a charity/nonprofit/community group that works with books and/or literacy!

Lucky for me, the place where I work is very supportive of community service.

One of the many programs they help us participate in is called Everybody Wins, USA.

Once a week, I go to an elementary school down the street and spend the lunch period reading to a kid. I was paired up with my kid last year and we are in our second year together. While he eats lunch, we take turns reading whatever he wants (usually, it's about zombies or comic book heroes).

Since we've started reading together, he has improved through leaps and bounds! He tells me he now reads at home too! The time every week we spend together not only promotes his literacy skills, but also his self confidence.

And honestly, it's the best part of my day.

If you're interested in Everybody Wins, please visit their website to find a chapter near you!

  2. SO cool, Kimberly!

I meet people all the time who behave like their kid who likes comics isn't reading "real" books. Whatever!

I'm glad he's a reader now. Sometimes it just takes encouragement and someone who understands what you want to read about. I admit I kind of frown upon people who only read sports books, but hey--if what you really want to read about is the perfect golf swing or the life of your favorite basketball player, don't let people like me keep you from the books you love. :)
