Review:
Day and June are on the run. They head towards Vegas, and the Patriots who they hope can help then. Then, Elector Primo dies and his son Anden takes his place. While in the Patriot's care, Day and June join forces with them to do the unthinkable- assassinate the new Elector.
But as June gets closer to him, and sees he is nothing like his father, can they stop the assassination?
Wow.
Well, that kinda kicked my ass.
I couldn't put it down.
The book is filled with action, even more so than the first book Legend. We see how the events of the last novel change our favorite characters. June is suspicious and has started questioning everything. She is still grieving over her lost brother. I love June. She's very brave, but vulnerable. I especially like how she can't seem to say the right things at the right time. She over thinks and by the time the perfect answer comes to her, the moment is gone. Very human, very compassionate and misunderstood.
Day is of course, our hero. He's passionate, reckless and at this point, very confused. He knows he has to get his brother back, at all costs. He knows he has feelings for June, but the world around them seems to be bent on tearing them apart.
Lu does a wonderful job with these characters, but also her secondary characters, especially given that there is a love triangle, or two. The Tess we know is still there, but she's grown up a bit and she seems to be going to a darker place which is interesting and heartbreaking. Anden is at odds with the council and seeks June's help. But will their friendship be more?
Lu's writing leaps off the page, pulling the reader in and never letting go. I especially love the contracts between the Republic and Colonies. We finally see the Colonies, close up. And they may not be all they appear to be.
The story moves fast and fierce, and as a reader, I was scrambling to keep up. Everything happens so fast, I really felt like I was on a rollercoaster. I loved watching the characters come to terms with their previous actions, figure out ways to move forward, and share in triumphs and great, sad losses.
I am very sad that I have to wait for book three. I mean, come on. I'm dying over here.
I will even say, that I love Prodigy even more than I loved Legend.
This is one of the strongest sequels I've read in a while.

great review. i think i liked prodigy better than legend, too. there is so much going on and i was biting my nails (figuratively) the whole time.

ReplyDeletewow! I'm so looking forward to reading Prodigy! Well first I have to read Legend! lol I'm the same as you, I love the "rollercoaster" feeling when reading. I think I like it more when a story has a few action scenes through the story. For me it would not be as good if they didn't include some action in it. LOVED your review on the book, it makes me want to read it right now:)

ReplyDeleteI liked Prodigy too but now I'm having a hard time remembering what happened cause it's been so long since I've read it! I remember that June kind of annoyed me a little bit but of course I loved Day the whole way through! I especially love the different colors of the text :)

ReplyDeleteMarie has moved onto my list of favorite authors. She has such an amazing way with action scenes. It's so easy to picture this series as a movie (please, please let that happen!)

Better than the first? But Legend was already so good, now I'm super-SUPER excited to read Prodigy. I'm always slightly wary of second books (middle book slump, and all that), but I'm happy to hear this avoids that :)
