Top Ten Tuesday! (22)

Hi Everyone!
Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday!
And thanks to The Broke and the Bookish for hosting this awesome weekly meme!

This week's question:
Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT pick up a book

Hmmmm...
These are more like general topics that may make me shy away from a book. There are exceptions to every rule!
1. Western
Sorry cowboys and cowgirls, but I'm not usually interested in Westerns.
Ever.
Much to the heartbreak of my father who dreamed of being a cowboy when he was young.
And enjoys watching reruns of Bonanza on television.

2. North Korea
I just found this out about myself. For book club, my good friend N picked a very well written book, critically acclaimed, award winning novel about North Korea. And while it deserves the praise, I have to say that I was pretty depressed reading this book.

3. Horror, specifically Fast Moving Zombies
Yes, I do read the occasional horror. But it's really not my genre. I'm scared easily, especially since watching 21 Days Later. Fast moving zombies are the stuff that gives me nightmares.

4. Self Help
I'm going to admit - I read a lot of Self Help books when I was younger. (Particularly SARK with her colorful writing and positive affirmations.)
That said, nowadays I steer clear of that section.

5.  Politics
I watch the news, and and can't stand some of the things that come out of people's mouths. Why would I want my reading material to reflect that?

6. Human Trafficking/Rape
I have a really hard time with stories about this topic. If I am recommend or interested in a book with this topic, I'll do a ton of research on it first to make sure it's worth my time and emotional stress before starting it. I've read some beautiful novels before that include this topic, but overall, I tend to shy away from it.

7. Fairy Stories
I'm not huge on stories about the fairies. Every once in a while, I'll stumble upon a series I'll really love (Melissa Marr anyone?) but overall, I'm not a fairy person.

8. War
Another one of my girlfriends, who I adore, picked a critically acclaimed book about World War I for book club. Yes, I finished it. No, I didn't enjoy it.
:(

9. Religious media books
Sorry peeps but religious media books are not my cup of tea. I do not read TV evangelist's books.
Books about religion are different and I'm very interested in clear and concise writing about different religions. But if you're going to preach, preach to someone else.

10.  Graphic novels based on books
I know, I know. But I love, Love, LOVE some of these books so much, I do not want to read them in graphic novel form. I love graphic novels, but for me, I'm not interested in picking up the Twilight graphic novel, Vampire Academy graphic novel, etc. I'd rather just read the book.
When I do sit down to read graphic novels, I'd rather focus on Fables, Y: The Last Man, and Buffy instead.

What's your Top Ten this week?

  1. I also have Horror, Self-Help, Politics, and Religious on my Top Ten! I agree with you on almost all of these as well. I don't typically like fairy stories either. And, yeah, books about war are not my thing either.

  2. I picked Western too. I haven't actually read a western book but I don't really love western movies so I don't think I would like a book with that theme.

  3. I happen to love westerns, but I grew up in the country around horses and mountains. But everything else on your list is on mine too. Especially zombies, religion (I'm even a religious person!), and politics (gag).

  6. I'm so glad you have zombies on your list! They made mine too! I feel like everybody loves zombies and I'm just like no. They are gross and stupid. No thank you. Westerns are a great pick. Didn't make my list, but probably should have. I definitely won't pick up a book with a western vibe. Great list!

  8. Great topics! I agree with the graphic novels and western books, they just don't connect with me. But everyone has their own niche of books :))

  10. so what I learnt from all this is that you should never sign up to that book club! seems like they choose the most depressing books. Obviously any book about North Korea is going to be depressing since how it is ruled and how the N. Koreans there live is kind of scary. I definitely also agree about politics and religious books.. oh as well as self help books.. for me it is basically all non fiction books and autobiographies. I can never bring myself to read graphic novels that are based on books.. just no. Only graphic novels I read are authentic japanese mangas... I can't even bring myself to read Manhwas! which are the korean "mangas"

    great list!

    1. Juhina,
      Thanks for stopping by!
I know- isn't it funny? And what is extra funny about it is that it's actually a book club I run! Ha!
I haven't read japanese mangas before. I would love to try those some time. Do you have any series you love?

  11. I have been thinking about reading some graphic novels and naturally I was most interested in those that are based on actual book series. I won a copy of "Fever Moon" by Karen Marie Moning which is the graphic novel to her Fever series. Haven't read it yet since I want to re-read the series beforehand. I am hoping I don't hate it.

Our Top Tens seem to be very similar :D

  12. I'm probably the unlikeliest person to be a Western fan, but somehow I am! :) Lonesome Dove is awesome and there's just something about that time period/setting for me as a reader. Not overly into fairies, politics or self-help myself though. But I read 'He's Just Not That Into You' for my speech class and it was downright hilarious! :) I haven't seen the movie though. Great list!

  13. Politics and religion are definitely immediate turnoffs for me. No thank you to them both.
Western books are also totally not my thing.
    Great list! (:

  14. Really? No horror? Those are some of my faves! I'm totally with you on religion and politics.

  15. Great list! I struggle with horror too--should have added that to my list. Hard and fast westerns, nope. I could do soft western...meaning settings on a ranch or such, but not hardcore. Thanks for stopping by list. :)

    Happy Reading!
